Seems like they were a group of friends and weren't expecting to get a random person joining (the Japanese chat is basically just "who is this?"). I would honestly expect the same of any MMORPG players in any language.

There are people like this in every game, i've met plenty of nice Japanese people in onigiri. To judge a whole nationality based on the actions of a few is pretty stupid.

Just joining a party without saying hello or anything is considered rude.

Most of them know English too. You could've asked "Can I join your PT?"
They would've responded with either "yes", "no" or "no speak english"
