I agree that it's a little awkward for me to hit the Shift key for guarding; one reason I hadn't been really practicing it (until now).
Honestly, I'd rather it were the space bar for Guard, and use Shift for jump.

well idk if i would use space for jumping as its normal for jumping to be spacebar at the least for me
but shift is um no
so ignore and i feel i lost one good defense in bad situation

Try letting your hand rest naturally over the kb, with fingers in w, a and d.
Your thumb should fall on space and pinky on shift, if you have average hands. (unfortunately not everyone does, or else kb design would be much better)

Well, one of my obstacles is simply getting proficient at WASD navigation. I've sometimes eschewed games which required it in the past, or opted for an alternate keymapping.
Also, my twitch reflex with the left hand is poor, so using three separate fingers (hovering over W, A, and D) and expecting to be able to send the mental command the correct finger to move in a split second when I want to dodge left (let's say) is still rather challenging.
I tend to press W a lot and "navigate" by moving my mouse/camera.
As mentioned in another thread, I don't currently have the optimal setup to play in, and I have to maintain my keyboard awkwardly on my lap. Since last night, I'm working on practicing Guard, but I'm using my thumb for that key.

Ahhh, I see. I did not notice the post in the other thread detailing your kb situation.
