As I made my way through the wide area from the east Izumo Rest Area to Oonaobi Shrine, I saw a strange youkai I'd never seen before being fought by a level 81 character. Unfortunately, I was only able to catch the very end of the fight and only glimpse its name, so at the time, I wouldn't have been able to provide many details about it. However, I did see that it was large. It was even bigger than the Yagyou-san in the area.

When I asked the player who had defeated it what it was, they simply said "world boss". They left soon after before I could find out more about it. Later on, in looking through the Youkai List, I was able to find the youkai I'm confident was it: the Look-Up Nyuudou, a youkai native to the areas around Sekigahara and Echigo.

What does all of this mean? Has anyone encountered this before, or had a similar experience? The player called it a "world boss," rather than a "bug" or "glitch". That sounds like it's not only intentional, but a normal part of the game. Does the game spawn higher-level youkai in lower-level areas to function as bosses, and if so, where and how often do they happen? Or was this something else entirely?

It seems like a new feature.

Many "bosses" are spawning in fields now, all the way from kikaigahara to nether seki.

In general, they're pretty strong for their level, but also appear to have a 100% chance to drop ryou chests.

Might be glitch or new feature.. since the same thing happened in seki/nether seki too
The only world boss i've ever spotted is the giant morizou near kikaigahara rest area

there was also a Nurikabe outside of Onigashima :P

Encountered one of these a few days ago. You don't stand much of a chance of killing it unless you're drastically over level for the area.

Simply by running in and out of its range to Fierce God's Focus/Exorcist Arrow I nearly broke my axe and bow before it finally went down. I'm guessing they have a few million HP.

It dropped a few ryou chests(one of which containing one million) and some friendship items. As far as I can see it's not particularly helpful if you're actually strong enough to kill it but if you invite any lower levels around the area they'd benefit substantially.

I'm glad to see so many responses to this thread. I'm also grateful that it proves I'm not insane.

Okay, so here's a question: any idea how frequently they spawn? I'd love to go out there and hunt for them, or at least the ones I'd be able to handle at my level.
