There's not a whole lot you can do aside from gamble or throw Smelting Reset Buttons at it.

First make sure it's a weapon worth getting +100; anything below level 60 or so will be replaced so quickly that it's hard to justify upgrading unless you have a ton of cash you don't mind burning.

Save any Smelting Amulets for the much higher smelts. You have a slightly better chance of succeeding overall if you boost a 30% success rather than a 40% success.

High base Grade saves Ryou. The sooner you can stop using the Grade +6 option the sooner you stop killing your funds. The minimum Grade needed on a weapon to reach 100 without dipping into the risky smelts is 76.

Always use the 5% increased success option once you're done raising Grade and evolving skills. For an extreme example using it on the very first smelt cuts your chance of failure in half.

It also helps to be lucky. Find Annie and rub her head for luck. I do it all the time, it works! I steal all her lucks.
