Be careful when doing so.

Unlike Odachi, axe cannot hit a large number of monsters for maximum damage. In fact, only 3-4 targets can be dealt maximum damage, even with your best mobbing skill.

Other targets will be dealt ~20% damage.

I'd also say a good 60-70% of the skills only deal maximum damage to a single target. One of the ougi is actually a prime example of this.

Really? Wow I assumed it would be a great nuke...damn.

20% really? :(

I guess ill keep the tachi and switch out my sword for an axe then, since i only use sword for bosses anyway :x\

Thanks for the info!

Er, didn't really mean to discourage you ;X

Axe is still great for nuking, just not in an area.

It's more of an issue in kaga->echigo than in edo though.

Ok so if the mob was like, supper packed together would it be effective? And I only really planned on using it in Edo so I guess that's good to hear. Just confused about what you consider an "area" haha

Ok I gotchya. So it would be good for Edo since most parties consist of more than one person carrying and every individual is generally engaged with only 3 or 4 monsters at a time?

It doesn't matter how packed together a mob is. You'll just do shit for damage on any target that exceeds the base limit, then completely not be able to hit any mob past the secondary limit. If anything, mobs being more packed together means that it would be less effective for an axe.
