There's a difference between not realising and not caring. I'm just saying why not make them less useless? Onigiri is I think one of three games I've played ever that has useless partners. (The other two, in case you're wondering, are Goldeneye (N64 version. Natalya.... all she does is die) and... I don't remember the other one. I may have boozed it out of my brain)

It's good that they don't hit hard because imagine a 10-man party in one dungeon, not to mention that they also kill steal (and give half xp iirc).
