I think that spear users are cool in the moment. An odachi user can kill mobs with one skill, but he can die with 2 attacks from normal mob as well. You can't have a tank killing everything, it would be unbalanced. If some balance is coming, I would like to see Odachi and Bow users getting a little nerf, not upping spear users. Also up wand users please xD.

As for his basic attack, many people said it before me: Just use one hit and move/roll/skill; don't try using full combo.

I've played spear exclusively this CBT, and here's what I've understood so far.

Currently, in this CBT, Spears are without a doubt, a really weak weapon. I use a spear because I wanted to use a spear, no other reason.
In this CBT, levelling is pretty slow. In solo play, we lack the damage to one shot mobs, or the range to pick them off one by one from afar. Considering the fact that we are almost always horribly underlevelled, you aren't able to tank anything anyway. In party play, you still lack the damage and speed needed to killsteal the mobs. Why? Because killing a mob nets you around two to three times more exp than just being there. Your almost-kills will be getting stolen by other players most of the time, unless you are fast and can actually can one-shot the mobs around. Therefore, you will level must slower than your damage dealing counterparts.

You have a minor advantage over your other melee counterparts during bosses with your ability to stay out of a lot of melee attacks' range.

If you want to play a spear user anyway, even after all that disadvantages, here are a few tips and tricks I picked up on handling a spear.
-Your normal attack range is ~4.7m. Abuse that to the fullest.
-The level 16 spear drops like candy from Kishinden. Try to get it to +50 and you can use it all the way to level 28 or something.
-The level 28 spear is fairly common from Byakko Caverns. +50 that and it'll take you solo all the way to Odin.
-Charge Spike gets a massive damage boost at rank III, as it turns into a combo skill and you get a free second thrust for no mana at all.
-Poison Spike is a good alternative. It has a fast cast time, allowing you to GTFO after attacking, and pretty decent damage.
-Wind Thrust may have a short cooldown and decent damage, but the cast time can sometimes become lethal. Use at your own discretion.
-Ice Blossom IV has about the longest cast time in the world, and the Ice Bamboo Spear doesn't give as much damage as your lv16 one. (Name forgotten). I stopped using it once I stopped grinding Kishinden. It just wasn't worth it.
-I've never gotten my hands on Rolling Thunder, so no comment.
-Water Dragon Spear gets an aoe upgrade at rank III, and that's where it starts to shine as a really powerful mobbing skill. All ranks of it has around 10m range, so feel free to use it from 10m away while you are kiting mobs or bosses. The damage isn't remarkable for the mana it costs, but it does its job well.
-The double edged skill is absolutely worthless. Never have anything to do with it. The cast time is horrendous considering you only use it when you're near death, or it doesn't deal any damage worth of note at all.
-Lunge Step is your best friend in the world. Try your best to get your hands on this skill. It has a range of around 10m, and a large aoe all around you, with the damage to one shot normal mobs. The mana cost is also surprisingly low.
-With enough player skill, you normally shouldn't have to block ordinary attacks that are perfectly dodgable. Just stay out of range and kill the mobs in a position where they cannot hit you.

OBT in the JP version changes nothing much, except the exp rate is five times the CBT of the US version. So you will be able to one shot mobs as well as all the other classes. Though, they still have a lot more damage than you, which helps them when bossing, since they are at less risk of getting killed by something unexpected as they can end the fight quicker than a spear user can. And who doesn't like seeing big numbers?

It actually costs you that mana per additional thrust but doesn't incur the cost until later (bug).

Use your range. Wind Thrust is extremely efficient for what it is.

I had it on my LIghtning Adorned Bamboo Spear (lv 34). Performed wonderfully and was the big damage dealer for my weapon set. Requires that you level up the skill, like all other skills.

Blanc wrote:-I've never gotten my hands on Rolling Thunder, so no comment.

It's YOLO mode, but worth it if you can pull it off. Has a pretty decent stun rate too, somewhere around 5-10%.

The damage is much, much better at rank IV and V, where you get more hits per spear (and at that point you're looking at double Water Dragon Spears). Furthermore, you can dodge out of it prematurely but the skill will still continue. S-grade material if it weren't for the fact that rank V costs 75 mp to cast (do Invigorate trades to offset the cost).

The force is great for the number of hits it does (2 x 7). Pic related:

Oh, and it also hits things that jump into the air, and hits things directly to your sides.

I hated Lunge Step because its criteria for where you go is very stupid when the trajectory involves going anywhere near enemies. It also costs a fortune for a single hit and incurs the same mp cost for the follow-up hits.

Blocking is great for rooting an enemy exactly where you want it to be. Screw the giant Mukabes - let my teammates wail on it.

I see. That makes it less useful. The extra thrust can become lethal for the user and the extra mana cost makes it not worth it.

Rufei wrote:Use your range. Wind Thrust is extremely efficient for what it is.

The main problem I've had with Wind Thrust was fact that you had to stand there for a while. I actually solo most of my dungeons (Yakumo Temple was an absolute nightmare, but I triumphed), so when the monsters only focus on you, even the slightest delay can become lethal. Also, I've noticed that Wind Thrust doesn't deal it's full damage against a moving enemy, or mobs of them. Not sure if it's a problem with my positioning or it's an inherent property of the skill. Despite having a longer cooldown, Spike Thrust does the same damage, has similar cast range, and a shorter cast time.

Rufei wrote:I had it on my LIghtning Adorned Bamboo Spear (lv 34). Performed wonderfully and was the big damage dealer for my weapon set. Requires that you level up the skill, like all other skills.

Once again, the cast time is actually lethal in solo play. In party play, if you can somehow acquire the skill on your weapon, go crazy.

Never got a rank IV and above of that skill. Good to know as well. Seems like overkill for ordinary mobs now.

I don't remember have subsequent hits, so is that a rank IV and V thing? I once again chose Lunge Step because of it's cast time. After your slash, you're pretty much free to tumble towards the side and continue kiting. Most of the other useful skills don't have the flexibility of kiting. And if anyone Lunges into an enemy about to attack you, then he deserves to die. The mana cost was not too high as far as I remember. My only problem with it was the cooldown.

Rufei wrote:Blocking is great for rooting an enemy exactly where you want it to be. Screw the giant Mukabes - let my teammates wail on it.

<Was a solo-ist. Tumbling allowed me to attack the enemy's unprotected flank. And block was somewhat unreliable for me considering it got broken all the time.
