You can wear parts, you don't need to select the whole costume.

It should tell you when you equip it and check your Status, I could be wrong.

Incidentally, does anyone know if the US version will get all the features that are in the JP version?

Impact, Pierce and Slice don't show up in the status screen, hence the question. Edit: I'm wrong, it does show up under the "Current Effect" section.
