The link that you've posted literally does nothing to support your argument. Since people don't like to read chunks and paragraphs, I've summarized it below, one point per paragraph (ish).
- MMO's are subject to psychological study and allow expansion of a player's emotional range.
- Many players spend a significant amount of time not actually playing, but doing something related to the game
- Many people feel strong emotions in MMO's.
- 21% of gamers prefer socializing online rather than offline
- 57% of people have had trap chars
- More addicted = higher avatar identification as opposed to self-concept
- There's been a huge survey amoungst mmo players to help w/ research with regards to them.
- WoW had a significant bug that psycologists were interested in.
You see that? You've literally contributed NOTHING AT ALL to your point. Don't just link a random page that seems related, and assume that people will agree with you because everyone is too lazy to read it. If someone does read it, it just makes you seem like you have a few screws loose.
And in the first point, you're wrong. You can't play an MMO however you like it. There's metas, different communities, etc. You'll always be restricted by the limits of a build, etc, as well as the way in which you interact with different groups within a community.
Unless you happen to belong in one of the predefined types that do work, you won't get exactly what you want.
________
The leeching argument.
Although its sad to admit, carrying is most efficient with leechers due to the exp intake speed. Carries WILL take people with them. However, this doesn't stop several moderately leveled people from forming a party and clearing as a group. These people instead, continue to leech despite the inferior levels of efficiency. Hell, I did this when edo just came out. Grabbed a few friends, then proceeded to do dungeons.
Field grind? Hell no, never. Not even if I only needed 5k exp to level.
Of course, this is due to the mentality that they've had the whole time, where they assumed that level was the only required aspect, when in fact, it's probably one of the least important things.
Imo, it's partially our fault for spoiling them like this, so at this point, we can only encourage them along through some tough love (denial).
Unless of course, they're genuine support mains, in which case it's actually justified. (That said, these should only appear in earlier content caps, as they should be able to carry before they hit the triple digits)

I'm also quite sick of rift goers. Been ignoring them since like, day 1, and had a certain group of autistic kids go around spreading rumors about me. Totally great eh?
Unfortunately, we have to accept them as a part of an mmo. People will log in for different purposes. Some actually enjoy the gameplay, while others just happened to move in with a group of friends, find similar people, and then just log in to hang out.
It's just a part of the mmo experience.
