The issue really isn't the grind, people complain because there is a disparity between versions. If the Japanese version had been the exact same as the NA version, people would of been non-the-wiser, especially if the game rearranged the level text to account for it. However it's extremely obvious as when you hit certain levels you get quests all the way back in the starter town, for dungeons that you've already done.

However this sort of behaviour is not good for the longevity of the game. The more people scream out that the average player is not "hardcore" enough to be good at the game, the more likely people will just walk out. MMOs are about the community and the more hostile that environment is, the more likely an MMO will be left in the dust. The less people are around, the less people buy stuff and then the company starts considering to pull the plug on the game, especially if it's a foreign version. The first thing that needs to be done is player retention. If the game bleeds players, then the game itself is seriously in danger. When PSO2 ever gets it's ass here in NA, then Onigiri runs a serious risk of losing most of it's player base due to PSO2 being better polished and under a recognizable IP. Blade & Soul will also pose a similar threat.

I can go about saying how Dwarf Fortress is the best thing since sliced bread and accuse everyone else of being a scrub, but that does not paint a good image for the Dorf Fort community as a whole to the eyes of the world and people are even less inclined to even go try Dwarf Fortress. The community in the game is already small as it is, lets try not to make it even smaller.

Once there is a big enough player base and if the vast majority lash out at the EXP curve, only then, something will be seriously wrong on the developers side. Either it is too grindy or there are not enough other distractions in the game to make the grind fun. When grinding becomes "fun" it isn't grinding any more. The most common remedy is to play with friends since you all can discuss other things while playing. Solo players, like myself, don't have anything to draw away from the tedium, except to either run music or Youtube in the background.

I personally had issues with the curve, until I sat down and played another character. I went right through the content in half the time compared to my first time. Now I think it's alright, but there's room for improvement.

In the end, calm down. Just go play the game and avoid the forums. That's what I'll be doing since the hostility here has shot through the roof :/

tl;dr
Wait to see if the game attracts a sizeable population before passing judgement.

I'm pretty sure you are in the minority here Lylah. Most westerners don't like grind based MMOs. Some companies change the exp rates of the game when they bring it over from Korea (which is famous of their grinders) to appeal to the western market. So no is not a good idea to leave it as it is. The game won't last long like that. I think the same rate as Japan is too much, maybe x3 or x4 would be good enough instead of x10 like over there though idk if that would be good enough for the high levels.

in Japanese version, half way through Kikaigahara u will notice that your level starting to fall behind despite doing all of the quest available. And at Kyoto it's clear that you're falling too far behind (level 28 against level 40, although some are doable). So you'll obviously need some grinding as soon as u hit Kyoto. I've never gone past Kyoto so I don't really know wat's after it.

Note that I played Bow, and it's considered an easy-mode for the game. Grinding might start at Izumo already for close-range players due to Beelzebub being harder for close-range. Though, I don't play close range so I don't know much about it.

I played bow as well but I mainly used it for bosses and some enemies that were dangerous for melee, I used twin swords for the rest. The bosses are just way more punishing for melee types than ranged plus the big level difference made it more difficult. Back in the alpha the exp rates were better so I used melee for most of it and it was even harder back then cause the mobs were so imbalanced or maybe our characters were. When open beta comes and hopefully they increase the exp I will use more melee cause I think is more fun.

In newer MMOs in the market today, the grind doesn't typically start until late-midgame. This is the norm. This is generally accepted. What is not generally accepted is the grind starting at level, what, 10? And the level cap is, what, 105? Typically, the grind should not even consider even waking up for the morning until around level 60. It should just look at the clock, do a little math in its head, and roll over to catch a few more hours at level 10.

God I'm tired.

Point is, it is hella too early to start the grind where it does. Expect not only an increase to where it is in Japan, but frequent x2 exp events.

Look, as it is, the grind doesn't start until level 30 in Japan from what I've heard. Everything up to Kyoto is basically the bloody tutorial. Who the hell wants to grind for the tutorial. You can have your grindfest at level 30, so do stop dragging your heels about getting there quicker.

CosmicBreak seems to be doing just fine with at best 1k total active users.
